American Right-Wing Christians Behind Uganda's "Kill Gays" Bill
American Right-Wing Christians Behind Uganda's "Kill Gays" Bill: "
Last month we learned that Uganda, where being gay can already bring a life sentence, was considering a death penalty for homosexual acts in certain situations. The proposed new law is now before Uganda's parliament. Life imprisonment is the minimum punishment for anyone convicted of having gay sex, under an anti-homosexuality bill currently before Uganda's parliament. If the accused person is HIV positive or a serial offender, or a 'person of authority' over the other partner, or if the 'victim' is under 18, a conviction will result in the death penalty. Members of the public are obliged to report any homosexual activity to police with 24 hours or risk up to three years in jail – a scenario that human rights campaigners say will result in a witchhunt. Ugandans breaking the new law abroad will be subject to extradition requests. 'The bill is haunting us,' said Mugisha, 25, chairman of Sexual Minorities Uganda, a coalition of local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex groups that will all be banned under the law. 'If this passes we will have to leave the country.'The bill has been denounced by the Swedish government and by UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has condemned the bill as well.
Over at Box Turtle Bulletin, Timothy Kincaid and Jim Burroway have been tracking the connection to the bill by American right-wing Christians, in particular by the secretive 'Family,' which includes as members prominent GOP politicians like Sen. John Ensign and SC Gov. Mark Sanford. The push for the 'kill gays' bill in Uganda is being promoted and funded by the Family. Go to Box Turtle Bulletin for an exhaustive recounting of the ties between Uganda, the Family, and the Christianist right.
Among those with close ties to Ugandans promoting the 'kill gays' bill is Saddleback megachurch Pastor Rick Warren, who has hosted many appearance by Ugandan Pastor Martin Ssempa, one of the bill's leading advocates. Warren has since denounced Ssempa's extreme anti-gay stance. But yesterday on Meet The Press, Warren refused to distance himself from 'kill gays' bill itself, saying, 'I never take sides.' Of course, we know differently from Warren's endorsement of Proposition 8.
What we are seeing in Uganda is a vivid depiction of what some on the Christian right would like to see in America. They are testing the waters there, dipping their vile toes into Uganda's government, seeing just how far they can take an anti-gay pogrom. Watch closely.

HomoQuotable - Sir Ian McKellan
'I increasingly see organized religion as actually my enemy. They treat me as their enemy. Not all Christians, of course. Not all Jews, not all Muslims. But the leaders. . . . Why should I take the judgment of a declared celibate about my sexual needs? He's basing his judgment on laws that would fit life in the Bronze Age. So if I'm lost to God, organized religion is to blame.' - Sir Ian McKellen, speaking to the Los Angeles Times. McKellen appears in the remake of the 1960s classic series The Prisoner, which debuts tonight on AMC.Thursday, November 12, 2009
23.5 hours a day gay
Being discussed in the forum right now:'Just about 23.5 hours of my day are consumed by me thinking about how I am gay. It ranges from non stop thinking about guys, trying to guess who is gay that is walking past me, how to get a boyfriend, to thinking about coming out (I think about this the most). Obviously this leaves little time for things like, writing essays, like I am suppose to be doing right now...
So back to the question for all you out guys...after you came out did your mind go back to normal, as in thinking about other things than just being gay?' Join the discussion

Dear Margo | Today 12:00 am
Marrying a Guy in the Mormon Closet. Oy.
Dear Margo: My wife’s 30-year-old daughter is quite immature emotionally and sexually. She has never had a boyfriend. Her father’s family is Jewish, but she converted to Mormonism at 18. She has a close friend who is gay, also a Mormon, so he cannot come out to his parents — though most of his friends and a cousin who is also gay know of his homosexuality. (He is extremely effeminate.) I have gay male friends, so I have no problem with homosexuality — unless the homosexual wants to marry my stepdaughter.
We’ve questioned her about the reasons for this marriage but haven’t gotten very good answers. She freely admits that the boy is gay, ...

Do you need another reason to keep that wallet shut when it comes to the DNC?
Let's just say that a little leaked email proves LGBTs are seen as the easy gAyTM to the DNC that can be manipulated, ignored, and pickpocketed as mob rule strips us of civil rights without a finger being lifted to help at the eleventh hour. It's worse -- stripping resources at the time of need. I won't chronicle what John and Adam have detailed quite well, but if you had any reservations about the intentions versus the reality of how games are played with our community, this should clear it up.
......
Shut the gAyTM down; only give directly to candidates and organizations you believe are truly working in your best interest. Not a penny to the DNC; it's the only leverage you have as an average citizen. The big donors in our community have to take a stand on this kind of nonsense, otherwise, they are enabling this kind of treatment of our community. It's party-building at our expense each and every time, as we watch windows of opportunity close. The thought of a halt to the cash flow will stop this BS pronto, if only to make them listen for a goddamn minute before stepping on the gas to run over us again.

What He Said
As Jesse Ventura said last night, “You can’t put a civil rights issue on the ballot and let the people decide. You have to have elected officials to who have courage to make the right decision. If you left it up to the people, we’d have slavery, depending on how you worded it.”
But when our lives aren’t run by mob rule, we do pretty well: We’ve pretty much conquered Hollywood.
We’ve conquered academia. The press is ours. Book publishing? Ours! The governments of Western and Northern Europe? Ours! And considering how people until 40 feel in this country, the future is ours, too!
So, this is what I have to say to Frank Schubert, Maggie Gallagher, Brian Brown, the Catholic Church, LDS, to the born-again nut jobs who haven’t a clue what the Golden Rule means and to the people who think that telling children that gay people exist is something like terrorism: Fuck you. Really: Fuck you. Fuck your lies. Your hypocrisy. Your cruelty. Fuck your pick-and-choose-only-the-most-bigoted-parts religion. Fuck your ignorance. Fuck your fear. Fuck you. Please: Eat shit and die. Fuck you. Very much.
Go read the whole thing.
